take no-prisoner

For the digital drawing course i had to make an artwork about a movie of choice. This piece I made is referring to the brutal (but very cool) western "the proposition" by Nick Cave. I'm working on lots of other assignments right now, so i don't have much time to take and post pictures or whatever, but there are many more finished works coming soon!

fluffy creatures

I'd like to introduce my 2 new roommates, Narciso and Emilia! They live here since tuesday and they're truly amazing. But the funny thing about the cats is, they have portuguese AND belgian roots! The owner of the parent-cats studied in belgium and brought the cat from there to Portugal. So they must have felt immediately home here. Maybe even a little to much, these fluffy creatures run like crazy and jump on the table like a bunch of kangaroos. But I love them, they brought some spice to our home.

never regret what makes you smile...

olá! Here are some pictures from last week, packed with lots of stencils again this time, but also the usual 'street life snapshots'. I guess I don't have real news to tell you, everything's going well and I'm enjoying every second of this wonderful 'erashmush' experience. Especially the variety between mingling with the Portuguese and having fun with some erasmus friends is pleasant. You learn interesting stuff about many different cultures and traditions this way, mostly the portuguese of course. I really love the way of living in Lisbon, so i started wondering what the actual difference is between Belgium and Portugal. And besides the weather (still hot!), the endless stairs and the breathtaking views the biggest difference, and what I like the most, are the smiling faces. Nearly every single person here greets you with a genuine smile! Maybe the sun evokes it in a way, I don't know, but it's undoubtedly significant to the country, and it made me turn my belgian frown into a joyfull smile! I once read the words 'never regret what makes you smile', well I'm never gonna regret this, that's for sure...

be your own dogg!

For the 'producao grafica' class we needed to design a t-shirt. This was an idea, based on a few sentences of the dEUS song 'fell of the floor, man'. But while I was working on this I heard it needed to be in black and white, so obviously I stopped!

You got to be your, you got to be your own dog, you know?

This is the excuse that we're making..

Yesterday night 2 many dj's played in Lux, one of Lisbon's biggest nightclubs. My fellow Belgians blew us away with a DJ set that knew no musical boundaries or genres and one which was lapped up by everybody present. From simian mobile disco's club banger 'it's the beat' to blur's 'song 2' and pretty much everything in-between, these two brothers from ghent certainly know how to rock one hell of a party. Dance and indie crowds united, cross-over tracks from tiga, the Chemical Brothers and the Prodigy went down a treat, despite the duo not playing their cut and paste musical collage style that we’ve become accustomed to hearing from the albums and their previous gigs. After an exhausting night we drove back home around 8 o'clock in the morning. While cruising the streets of Lisbon dEUS's '7days, 7 weeks' echoed through the radio. Half awake, half asleep I reached a mellow state of mind.

stuck between doors

Yesterday I stumbled into a hilarious situation. While i was headed back home from the language course with some fellow students, I actually got stuck between the doors of a subway-train in the Campo Grande station. I barely got in, but my right arm and brand new bag were still outside! We were trying hard to pull the doors apart, and with a little help i managed to get in before the metro started to move out of the platform. I really regret not having pictures of this hoopla, cause THAT would have been a great asset to the blog!

first week

Bom día! The first week in the academy went pretty good. I met some interesting people and i'm actually getting quite used to the new school routine as well. Tomorrow at 6 PM starts the first lesson of my portuguese language course, most of the erasmus-people I met are attending the same course so it's gonna be fun. Who knows, maybe my next blog-post will be written entirely in portuguese (well, I can dream, can't I?)!

autumn's arriving

The start of school coincides with the autumn arriving in Portugal, the temperature remains more or less the same but it's starting to rain a lot lately. Nevertheless, the weather didn't stop me from attending my first classes in the Faculdade de Belas-Artes da Universidade de Lisboa! The opening days were a bit awkward. During most of the classes (in Portuguese) I just had to wait till they where finished, so the teacher could repeat his instructions in English. But I don't mind, you can't possibly expect them to adept to the terms of one humble erasmus-student. On the second day I met many kindred spirits; Brazilian, Hungarian, Spanish, Australian, Italian, Dutch, Israelian and a lot of German erasmus students, so that was a huge relief and a big help cause some of them spoke a fair amount of Portuguese! Besides that, the school's organisation is'nt going as planned for now, lots of classes are being cancelled and stuff like that. But they promised it will all be ok during next week. I don't want to sound to excited cause there's still a long road ahead. But if you don't know where you're going, any road will take you there.
